چکیده

AIM Lactose and complex carbohydrates maldigestion, common food intolerances due to low gut content of α- and β-galactosidase, lead to abdominal symptoms including pain, diarrhea, bloating, flatulence, and cramping. Commonly, intolerant patients are advised by physicians to avoid the offending foods (dairy foods, cereals, beans, etc). This food-limiting option, however, has possible nutritional risks. We have therefore evaluated the impact of using pure, enteric-coated α- plus β-galactosidase on gut symptoms in intolerant subjects instead of avoidance of the offending foods. METHODS Sixteen subjects intolerant to lactose and/or complex carbohydrates were enrolled and evaluated in terms of gut symptoms with 1) uncontrolled diet, 2) diet devoid of offending foods, and 3) uncontrolled diet along with pure, enteric-coated α- and β-galactosidase (DDM Galactosidase(®)). RESULTS Even with the uncontrolled diet, intolerant subjects treated with DDM Galactosidase(®) exhibited reduced gut symptoms (bloating, flatulence, diarrhea, and constipation) significantly better than the control treatment as well as having a diet devoid of offending foods. CONCLUSION DDM Galactosidase(®) is a valid and safe optional treatment to counteract lactose and complex carbohydrate intolerance in subjects who prefer not to avoid, at least partially, offending foods.

Amantadine Plus Interferon-α Versus Interferon-α Monotherapy for the Treatment of Chronic Hepatitis-C Infection in β-Thalassemia Major Patients: A Randomized Double Blinded Pilot Study in Shiraz, Iran

Background: Hepatitis-C infection is a major problem in chronically transfused patients. We compared Interferon-α (INF-α) monotherapy with combination of INF-α and amantadine in the treatment of β-thalassemia major patients who were chronically infected with HCV.Materials and Methods: Forty six thalassemia major patients who were chronically infected with HCV were randomly divided into two grou...

Bioaffinity Based Immobilization of Almond (Amygdalus communis) b-galactosidase on Con A-layered Calcium Alginate-cellulose Beads: Its Application in Lactose Hydrolysis in Batch and Continuous Mode

In this study, immobilization of partially purified almond (Amygdalus communis) β-galactosidase on Con A layered calcium alginate-cellulose beads was investigated. Immobilized β-galactosidase retained 72% of theinitial activity after crosslinking by glutaraldehyde. Both soluble and immobilized enzyme exhibited the samepH and temperature optima at pH 5.5 and 50ºC, respectively. Howev...

Improving Properties of a Novel β-Galactosidase from Lactobacillus plantarum by Covalent Immobilization.

A novel β-galactosidase from Lactobacillus plantarum (LPG) was over-expressed in E. coli and purified via a single chromatographic step by using lowly activated IMAC (immobilized metal for affinity chromatography) supports. The pure enzyme exhibited a high hydrolytic activity of 491 IU/mL towards o-nitrophenyl β-D-galactopyranoside. This value was conserved in the presence of different divalent...

Galacto-oligosaccharide synthesis from lactose solution or skim milk using the β-galactosidase from Bacillus circulans.

The synthesis of galacto-oligosaccharides (GOS) catalyzed by a novel commercial preparation of β-galactosidase from Bacillus circulans (Biolactase) was studied, and the products were characterized by MS and NMR. Using 400 g/L lactose and 1.5 enzyme units per milliliter, the maximum GOS yield, measured by HPAEC-PAD analysis, was 165 g/L (41% w/w of total carbohydrates in the mixture). The majo...

Effect of dietary A-Max supplementation as a prebiotic on growth performance and hemato- immunological parameters of great sturgeon (Huso huso Linnaeus, 1758) juveniles

An 8-week feeding trial was conducted to evaluate the effects of dietary commercial prebiotic A-Max, a mixture of mannan oligosaccharides, fructo oligosaccharides and β glucan, on growth and hemato-immunological parameters of great sturgeon (Huso huso) juveniles. After acclimation, fish (initial weight of 28.79±0.85 g) were placed into 12 tanks (30 fish per tank). Basal diet (containing 44%...
